Tottenham Hotspur - Spartak Moskou (a.s. donderdag)
Re: Tottenham Hotspur - Spartak Moskou (a.s. donderdag)
Darren Bent is a doubt for Thursday night's final UEFA Cup group match against Spartak Moscow.
The striker hasn't trained since Monday after being laid low by tonsilitis.
It hands boss Harry Redknapp a selection problem up front as he's also without cup-tied Roman Pavlyuchenko, so Fraizer Campbell - thankfully back in training after a calf injury - is our only available, senior striker.
Harry also has a selection headache defensively after Jonathan Woodgate limped out of Saturday's draw against United with a back injury. Vedran Corluka switched to centre-half that day but he's cup-tied and Harry insists he will not play Ledley King in this fixture.
"Jonathan landed awkwardly and his back went into spasms, but hopefully he won't be out for long," reported Harry on Wednesday. "I wouldn't risk Ledley in this game as I want him for league games and Vedran isn't available.
"Michael Dawson was outstanding against United and he will play. Tom Huddlestone or Didier Zokora could also play there so we'll have a look at the situation."
Jermaine Jenas is also sidelined after picking up a calf strain against United. "We'll have to wait and see on that one," added Harry. "He could be available Sunday week (West Brom) or even make it against Fulham on Boxing Day."
Giovani (ankle) and Alan Hutton (foot) remain out.

Re: Tottenham Hotspur - Spartak Moskou (a.s. donderdag)
Re: Tottenham Hotspur - Spartak Moskou (a.s. donderdag)

Get up! Stay on the scene.

COYS!!

UEFA Cup Preview: Tottenham Hotspur - Spartak Moscow
What: UEFA Cup Group D Matchday 4
Who: Tottenham Hotspur (2nd, 6pts), Spartak Moscow (4th, 3pts)
When: Thursday 18 December, Kick-off: 7.45pm GMT
Where: White Hart Lane, Tottenham, North London
»Comments Print This Story Send To A Friend Contact Us galleria zoom Unlike most UEFA Cup group tables, the final placings in Group D are still largely unresolved going into the final week of matches, with plenty for both Tottenham Hotspur and Spartak Moscow still to play for. Spurs need a point to ensure their second-place finish, while Spartak could also qualify as runners-up should they manage a victory at White Hart Lane. A defeat however would see the Russian side dumped out of the competition.
Harry To Wrap It Up Before Christmas?
Tottenham Hotspur looked set to struggle to make it through to the knock-out stages after turning in an unconvincing performance in losing against Udinese in their opening game under previous manager Juande Ramos. There has of course been a change in personnel since then, and under new boss Harry Redknapp Spurs have become far more formidable opposition, annihilating Dinamo Zagreb at home before travelling to Holland with a weakened squad and returning with all three points having overcome NEC Nijmegen.
With the North London side all but qualified, Redknapp may again decide to rest some of his first team for this potentially difficult encounter, though a win could see Spurs top the group against all the odds, depending on the result between Udinese and NEC. Tottenham are still at the wrong end of the Premier League table, so squad preservation will probably be deemed more important than ensuring an easier tie in the next round.
The nature of the UEFA Cup knock-out rounds also poses the question of where in your group it is best to finish, with Champions League teams entering the competition at this stage, having been eliminated from Europe’s most illustrious contest. In finishing third you are drawn against a team who have topped a UEFA Cup group table, while second position guarantees you a tie with a team who finished third in their Champions League group. If Spurs did lose, they could find themselves facing the likes of Marseille or Fiorentina.
Last Chance Saloon For Spartak
The journey to North London could have been a formality for Spartak Moscow had they managed to kill of NEC Nijmegen in their last UEFA Cup game. The Russian side were a goal ahead from the early stages up until the last six minutes, conceding two goals at home, blowing Group D wide open and handing their Dutch opponents a European lifeline. Spartak must now take at least a point away from White Hart Lane to stand any chance of progressing, and with fellow countrymen and arch-rivals CSKA Moscow strolling, they will be eager to keep up with their neighbours.
With the Russian Premier League season over and the Red and Whites finishing in a disappointing eighth position, there has been only European competition to focus on recently, and head coach Michael Laudrup arranged a warm-up game with Chelsea Reserves prior to the meeting with Spurs. The Russian side arrived in London well in advance for the game for acclimatisation, and won 2-0 in a shortened encounter, a result they will be looking to repeat.

TEAM NEWS
Tottenham
Having already featured in European competition for Spartak this season, Roman Pavlyuchenko, the striker, is ineligible for Spurs and will not line up against his old club. Vedran Corluka, the defender, is also cup-tied, while Darren Bent has tonsilitis, and injuries to Jonathan Woodgate and Jermaine Jenas will keep them both out of contention. Club captain Ledley King is likely to be rested and Harry Redknapp will call on several youth team players to fill up the squad, with Dean Parrett and John Bostock, the 16-year-old midfielder who has already featured once this season, the most likely to play a part.
Possible Starting XI: Gomes, Gunter, Zokora, Dawson, Assou-Ekotto, Lennon, O’Hara, Huddlestone, Modric, Bentley, Campbell.
Spartak Moscow
Vladimir Bystrov and Radoslav Kovac are both unavailable for Spartak, as they recover from a knee ligament injury and collarbone surgery, respectively. Sergei Parshivlyuk has returned after suffering from a cold, and South American pair Welliton and Clemente Rodriquez are available again following injuries.
Possible Starting XI: Pletikosa, Parshivlyuk, Jiranek, Fathi, Shishkin, Bazhenov, Zotov Covalciuc, Pavlenko, Saenko, Maloyan.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Tottenham
Harry Redknapp has welcomed Luka Modric back into his starting 11 after an injury kept the Croatian playmaker out for a number of weeks, and with players such as Jenas and Pavlyuchenko unavailable for Spurs, his creativity will be key in providing Fraizer Campbell with scoring opportunities. The midfielder may take the initiative and score his first goal for his new club as he has been threatening to do since the arrival of Redknapp.
Spartak Moscow
If Spartak are to stand any chance of qualifying for the next phase they must get a win here, and their goal is likely to come under a barrage of attacks at White Hart Lane, despite Spurs’ depleted squad. Expect goalkeeper Stipe Pletikosa to have a busy night; he is bound to be exposed as his side search to find the net and he must keep the damage to a minimum.
PREDICTION
Michael Laudrup will know that victory is the only result that ensures his side a route to a knock-out opportunity in the UEFA Cup, as a draw means they will have to rely on results elsewhere. Tottenham are under much less pressure, but they have been so dominant at home in Europe over the past few seasons and they are likely to send Spartak fans home heartbroken.
Tottenham Hotspur 2 – 0 Spartak Moscow
